Apply a few adjustments to create a stylized black & white image.

Based on a nice design mock-up on Sitepoint forums, this tutorial shows you how to make a stylized Black & White image.

Step 1: Start with a nice image of a building. You can use a free image from from Stock Xchg.

Step 2: Create a new layer above the image, fill it with solid white, and change the blending mode to Hue

Step 3: Adjust the levels (Image -–> Adjust -–> Levels). You may want to adjust individual levels for red, green, and blue separately.

Step 4: Make a few new layers, get a soft brush, color white, and brush over darker areas of the image. Then lower the opacity of the brush layers way down to 10-15%.

Step 5 (final step): Add some text, play with blending modes (this example used multiply, 50% opacity) and you’re done. Note that this image looks a bit different from the one cited above. Its hard to duplicate certain methods exactly, especially when you start with a different image. Anyone want to buy some downtown Chicago real estate?
