Philosophy

A few of the design and development principles we follow at exp design:

  • Keep it simple. Clients and users appreciate simplicity. It’s easier to find what they want and friendlier to navigate. We support the trend toward simpler, elegant designs, but simplicity should not mean boring or unoriginal. Clean lines, complementary colors and fonts and user-friendly layouts should be the foundation of a design, not an afterthought.
  • Serve the intended audience. While it is important to give the paying client what they want, it is equally important to remember that in the case of public web sites, the design is ultimately used by the site’s audience, not the client.
  • Empower clients and build in flexibility for the future. Using Content Management Systems (CMS) like Expression Engine empowers clients to add, update, delete and manage their own content.  Additionally, the software offers great flexibility for adding features later on.  Your site should grow with your business.
  • Follow web standards. In the early days of the web, designers often wrote messy code and used inventive tricks to get the various web browsers to display sites correctly. This worked fine until new browsers came along that interpreted that code differently, often breaking the design and requiring sites to be rewritten to support them. In response, the organization webstandards.org, pressured browser manufacturers and designers to start following a set of generally accepted standards.

Work from exp design follows current web standards, using the CSS box model. Sites designed to this standard are viewable across the widest range of present and future web browsers. In non-technical terms, this means that designs conform to modern standards, using a method that simplifies site layout, maintenance, and future growth. Web Standards can be considered a set of best practices for designing web sites.
